I have been running this path of awareness for a long time. This path of developing mental presence and be detached, accepting the good moments and the bad ones, welcoming into my heart whatever the feelings and thoughts were knocking at its door. I knew very well they were teachers showing up to pass on me what I missed to catch from my past experiences and what I needed to move forward.
I have been trained to develop the practice of “deep community”, as it is named by the Buddhist teacher and author Mushim Patricia Ikeda. And that attitude goes beyond including all beings, it includes all thoughts, all emotions, all realities. The bad ones as well as the good ones.
I have been a Police Detective for 20 years and I had difficulties to accept the daily bad experiences I had to face up. At that time I was a good student but not a good practitioner, I knew very well the theory but I hadn’t developed wisdom and I lost my biggest spiritual challenge, my biggest personal battle. The reason? I didn’t have the right approach in dealing with big difficulty and challenge. For sure the Police environment was a challenge environment but life challenged me to prove how I had a wrong perception about who I really was.
You cannot change what it is around you, you cannot rubber the entire world to make your walk comfortable. Better to rubber your own feet, better to control your mind as you cannot control the other’s.
Today I keep maintaining the same child-like attitude towards life but I am more a practitioner then a student. And as the sweet little baby in the photo I like to turn around my head, look at my past and be surprised of all the happenings but feeling the tender hug life is giving to me in the present moment.
