Veganism & No Violence. A Talk with Gary Yourofsky
In a world where violence is normalized, systematized, and hidden behind euphemisms, the choice to live non-violently becomes a radical act. In my latest podcast episode, I had the honor of sitting down with Gary Yourofsky, one of the most influential voices in the modern animal rights movement. His lectures have reached millions of viewers across the world, translated into 35 languages, and have inspired countless people to question their conditioning and embrace a compassionate lifestyle.
This conversation is not simply about veganism as a diet. It is about ethics, education, non-violence, and the evolution of human consciousness. It is about the urgent need to expand our circle of compassion to all beings, not only the ones we find relatable or convenient to love.
Education as a Force for Awakening
Gary shared how his direct, unapologetic approach in classrooms changed people’s body language—from defensive to open, from hostile to receptive. For him, the key has never been marketing or persuasion, but truth without sugar-coating. He highlights a painful reality: most people are unaware of what they support—artificial insemination of cows, the killing of male chicks, factory farms, and slaughterhouses operating on an unimaginable scale.
The question he asks is simple: Why do humans become defensive when confronted with the violence they pay others to commit?
Challenging Tradition and Normalized Violence
Together, we explored how deeply violence is woven into cultural norms. Like many oppressive systems in history, animal exploitation survives because it is tradition, and tradition rarely gets questioned. Gary argues that if children were taught the truth from a young age—without censorship, without fairy tales about “humane farming”—the cycle of harm would collapse within a generation.
We also touched on religion and its role in reinforcing human supremacy, and how a shift toward true compassion requires unlearning, humility, and moral courage.
The Activist’s Journey: Fire, Fatigue, and Purpose
Gary spoke openly about:
his 29-year vegan journey
77 days in jail for liberating minks in 1997
the emotional weight of witnessing cruelty for decades
PTSD and stepping back from activism in 2014
rediscovering hope and witnessing the impact of his work through younger activists
Behind his uncompromising voice is a man who has sacrificed peace, reputation, and personal comfort for a cause with no applause and no reward—only the hope that someone will wake up.
The Scale of Violence and the Possibility of Change
More than 80 billion land animals and over 2 trillion marine animals are killed each year for human consumption. Not because we need to eat them—but because we were taught to, and never questioned it.
Gary stresses that animal agriculture is the largest, most ignored injustice of our time, yet also one of the most solvable. Veganism is not perfection. It is a commitment to do the least harm and to live in alignment with our values of peace, empathy, and non-violence.
A Movement Rooted in Ahimsa, No Violence
As a yoga practitioner and teacher, I cannot separate this topic from Ahimsa, the principle of non-harming. Yoga asks us to expand awareness, to feel, and to act responsibly. To live yoga is to dismantle violence where we find it—even in our own habits.
This is why this conversation matters.
This is why I invite you to listen.
